I love to eat. I bet you do, too. Eating is necessary for survival, and it’s a lot of fun too, because some foods are extra tasty. But we have to watch what we eat, especially when it comes to a lot of those really delicious foods.
Everything we put into our bodies has calories. And when we eat more calories than we burn, our body stores those extra calories as fat.
Here, our team nutritionist offers five strategies for smart eating. Follow them, and you’ll be just fine.
Strategy #1:
Always be aware. Think about what you’re putting in your body. Is it high in sugar or fat? It’s easy to forget that when a certain kind of food tastes good, it isn’t necessarily good for you. If you don’t know what’s in your favorite foods, find out.
Strategy #2:
Master moderation. Don’t worry. You don’t have to stop eating your favorite foods. Just don’t go overboard. Sometimes eating in moderation takes a special kind of strength — mental strength. When you are strong mentally, you can decide with your head instead of your stomach, and make healthier choices.
Strategy #3:
Choose MyPlate. OK, not literally. But visit this web site where you can learn all about the food portions. It’s the best way to find out what kind of foods are right for your body, and how much of them you should eat every day.
Strategy #4:
Say no to sugar. Sugar tastes good. Really good. But too much of a good thing in your mouth is bad for the rest of your body. So save soda and other sugary treats for special occasions. They taste better when you make them a special treat!
Strategy #5:
Snack smart. Everybody needs a snack now and then. But snacks with bad ingredients are bad news. Look at the label on your snack. If it’s high in fat or sugar, try something else. Be creative! Make your own snack masterpiece using ingredients that are good for you.
